Victoria Barnes, an Activity Therapist from Community Programs, approached me over the summer with an idea for increasing community cohesion among the campuses at AK Child & Family. Victoria is a lively and creative member of Community Programs and her vision was to provide an outlet for the youth to express themselves artistically for an audience comprised of friends and family.
The Hot Spot Café, an open mic poetry night, was the culmination of this idea and hopefully will pave the way for more events like it. Nine youth helped host this evening, participated in a pre-event workshop to create original poetry, and encouraged peers and family members to share their talents on stage while the audience enjoyed coffee and pastries.
This event could not have happened without the enthusiasm and support from Coach T, the Social Media Group, the Licensing Team, Activity Therapist Jake Hill, and invaluable point people from all campuses who helped spread the word. Let's keep the momentum going! We look forward to more events like this one!
