If I learned one thing from my past time working as a Psychiatric Treatment Counselor, it is that good leadership is a key component in running a smooth shift. A hard day’s work at Newhall cottage is a different kind of hard day’s work than most of the working people of Anchorage experience. On good days we have the opportunity to cook good food for people we care about and catch them being good. On bad days we are faced with processing and helping students cope with unfortunate and unfair circumstances that are unavoidably their reality. There is joy and meaning in the work we do, and I am personally reminded of this most at the end of a long day when all you can do is take a deep breath and reflect on all we have to be grateful for in our own lives. What a privilege it is to share that joy and love with those who need it most.
