Blessings for the School Year

Every year, the Sunday before school starts; we do a school blessing chapel with our students. Placing this time of new beginnings into God’s care can help ease the anxiety surrounding change and amplify the excitement for new possibilities. While here in treatment, many of our students do not attend their “home” schools. It always touches my heart when our students pray for their “new” school in the same breath as their “old” school and in that moment relinquish all thoughts of school rivalry. Some students have even gone as far as saying, “I was taught to hate our rival school – but now I’m a part of it -and so I just pray blessings for everyone at every school."

Below is a piece of our school blessing liturgy. Blessings to all students and faculty as they enter this new school year!

All: Be with us God.
One Voice: It all starts again, God. Help me to look forward to the first day of school with joy! Give me peace, take my worries, and let me look forward to Wednesday with joy!
All: Be with us God.
One Voice: I look forward to being with new people. The summer has been fun. I also sit here ready for something new. This year I’ve grown into a different person than I was last year. Let this be an amazing school year, God.
All: Be with us God.
One Voice: I don’t ask that it be easy. I just ask that it be amazing. If I always walked the easy path, I would miss the wondrous beauty that goes with climbing over the mountain.
All: Be with us God.

One Voice: Let me know that I am never alone, God. Even when I really mess up, let me know I am never alone. Walk with me now as I walk into the first day of school.
All: Be with us God.
One Voice: Be with me God as I prepare to do my school work. Let me not get dragged down or discouraged. Put a love of learning in my heart.
All: Be with us God.
One Voice: God, we give thanks for the gift of education. We give thanks for me and all the students, for teachers, helpers and school officials, for coaches and staff we pray to you. We seek your blessing God.
All: Be with us God.
One Voice: God, we pray that you bless our minds, our hands, our hearts. Bless my papers, my pencils, bless all of our work.
All: Be with us God.
All: PRAYER
Holy Friend, bless the places where we learn. Bless the books, and the bookcases. Bless the desks, bless the lights and the fans. Bless each teacher, bless each classmate, and bless each person for the willingness to listen, to work hard and to study. Bless each person for the times each one will grumble and complain. Bless each person for the times we will have fun. God, fulfill our hopes for this school year, take away our fears. God remind us that you will be with us every day, when our work is easy and when our work is hard. God remind us, that you will be with us when we are tired and crabby and having a bad day, and that you will be with us when we are happy and everything seems to be going right. Remind us God, that we are never, ever alone. For you are always with us. Amen.
