It Takes a Village

What a blessing when God’s children share their gifts with one another! We are incredibly blessed to have so many congregations and individuals who support our Spiritual Life Department! Without their constant prayers and in-kind and financial gifts, we would not have an abundant and thriving spiritual life program. With most of our services paid for through health insurance billing and government monies, we need to fund our Spiritual Life program separate from the rest of our agency, and thus depend upon the generosity of our supporting churches, denominations and individuals who value the spiritual component of our work.

One example of the care that we are surrounded with is the First Christian Church (FCC) annual benefit concert. For the past six years, FCC has invited the community to enjoy an evening of music, food and fellowship all in support of our Spiritual Life Department. Last night’s concert opened and closed with our own Rev. Rachel Hollander leading us in two beautiful songs, “Always so Grateful,” and, “Send my Love.” It was a joy to raise our voices as one to the One who sustains us all. As always, The Midnight Sons A Cappella Choir wowed us with their 5 part harmonies, fun song choices and generous spirits. It is amazing the music that can be created with just the human voice. And lastly, we were treated to a new blue grass group called “The Vinyl Floors.” These talented young men are students at Service and South High Schools. Their stage presence was beyond their years, their musical talent inspiring, and their song and arrangement choices moving. The Vinyl Floors presence and music was such a gift. What a beautiful thing to witness young people sharing their time and talents to serve other young people in need.

After the concert, the generous giving continued! In addition to the blessing of a beautiful concert, we were gifted with 12 beautiful hand-made quilts for our welcome basket program from the FCC “Wednesday Quilters.” And to top it off, all were welcome to enjoy a 2-table feast of refreshments ranging from hot meatballs, cheese platters and veggies, to cookies, cake, and yummy fresh fruit.

When asked to speak at the event, all I could say is, “my heart is so full to be in the presence of such love and care – thank you, thank you, thank you.” For indeed we could not do the spiritual work we do in this place without the great cloud of witnesses that surround us. Thank you to all who surround us on a daily basis through prayers, presence, gifts and service. Yes! What a blessing when God’s children share their gifts with one another!
